What should I do after a workplace injury?
After a work injury, getting medical care and properly reporting what happened help establish the record your claim needs.
IF YOU ARE INJURED, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.
Safety and medical care come first. Call 911 when someone is injured. Gathering evidence should not delay emergency care.
REPORT THE INJURY PROMPTLY.
Identify when, where, and how it happened, and keep a record of whom at work you notified. For accidental work injuries, Maryland generally requires employer notice within 10 days. Late notice should be reviewed for possible exceptions.
SAVE ALL MEDICAL AND WORK RECORDS.
Make sure to tell the insurance provider that the injury happened at work. Save work-status notes, restrictions, treatment recommendations, and dates of missed work. Be proactive and gather any wage information, such as pay stubs, overtime, or invoices.
Confirm that the employee claim was filed. Reporting the injury to your employer is separate from filing your claim with the Workers’ Compensation Commission. Ask your lawyer to confirm the filing and claim number.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT MOVING FORWARD?
Reporting starts the process; it does not establish that every requested benefit has been approved. Meet with a qualified Attorney, who can explain your claim’s status, any disputes or issues, and what information is still needed.
