Who should I report the incident to?

IF YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.

Get emergency help first, then report the incident to the appropriate person or organization. Depending on where it happened, that may be your employer, a school administrator, a property manager, a business manager, or a care facility administrator. If there is an immediate threat or medical emergency, call 911 rather than waiting for an internal report.

DEPENDING ON YOUR SITUATION, DIFFERENT PATHS OFFER DIFFERENT RESULTS.

Make the report promptly and keep a copy. Include when and where the incident occurred, what you personally observed, known injuries, and available witness information. Record whom you notified and ask for an incident or reference number.

Reporting an incident is not always the same as filing a claim. For example, notifying an employer does not replace filing a workers’ compensation claim, and reporting to a property manager may not notify the relevant insurer. Ask about any additional reporting steps and deadlines that apply.
