Should we change care facilities or hospitals?
After a care-related injury, the next decision should focus on the person’s safety, medical needs, and continuity of treatment.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHERE YOU RECEIVE TREATMENT.
If you or a loved one feels unsafe or not properly cared for, your concerns are valid. Here are some general guidelines to consider:
Assess the current risk. Identify whether urgent treatment, a different level of care, or additional supervision is needed. If you feel that your loved one is better off somewhere else, it may be time to move forward.
Plan the transition. Confirm that the receiving facility can meet the person’s needs, accept the admission, and receive records, medication information, and necessary equipment.
Check practical and financial arrangements. Availability, coverage, transportation, and notice requirements can affect a voluntary move. Medicare advises families to discuss leaving procedures with the current nursing home.
