Secondary & Worsening Injuries
WHAT IF MY INJURY GETS WORSE OR ANOTHER INJURY IS DISCOVERED?
Your understanding of an injury can change as doctors evaluate your symptoms and recovery. Here are some general guidelines to follow:
Report changes to your treating provider
Explain when the symptom began, how it changed, and how it affects home life, work or school, and other activities.
Update your lawyer and relevant claim records
Make sure to let your Attorney know of the new medical information. If you have a Workers’ Comp case, adding an affected body part may require a formal claim amendment with the Maryland WC Commission.
Distinguish a newly identified condition from a new accident
Be truthful and open about your symptoms and conditions. Your job is to do your best to separate the injury that’s part of your claim from anything unrelated. Tell your doctor and lawyer about any later events so the cause of each one can be evaluated accurately.
NEW SYMPTOMS NEED MEDICAL EVALUATION AND CAREFUL DOCUMENTATION.
New symptoms need to be understood by you and your medical provider. Their appearance does not automatically establish that they are covered by the original claim.
