Do I have to wear a seatbelt?
YES. YOU SHOULD WEAR A SEATBELT EVERY TIME.
A rideshare trip is still a car trip, and passengers should buckle up in both the front and back seats. A vehicle collision is a terribly violent event, and we have worked with many victims.
Maryland law requires drivers and passengers to wear seat belts. Drivers are also responsible for ensuring that passengers under 16 are properly restrained. Always buckle up yourself and all passengers, even for a short trip across the yard or up the road.
Maryland has additional requirements for children because younger passengers need restraints suited to their size and age.
Children under age 2: Must ride in a properly used, federally compliant rear-facing child safety seat until they reach the seat manufacturer's specified height or weight limit.
Children under age 8: Generally must use an appropriate child safety seat, including a booster seat, unless they are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
Children under age 16: Must be secured in an appropriate child safety seat or seat belt, subject to the applicable requirements and exceptions.
If you are driving young relatives or other children, plan ahead. Do not assume another driver will have a booster seat. Families need to arrange appropriate safety measures before a trip.
