How do I keep my child safe on school buses?

School-bus safety begins before boarding and continues after a child gets off and walks home. Here are some quick tips:

  • Practice safe waiting and boarding. Teach kids to wait away from the curb, to avoid running near the bus, and to board only when it’s time.

  • Teach safe crossing habits. Never walk behind the bus. Make sure the driver can see the child before crossing in front. Look both ways before crossing streets and sidewalks.

  • Teach kids to wear seatbelts and prevent horseplay. Standing up, moving, or playing while on the bus can put kids in danger. Make sure they understand safety in cars and other vehicles.

IF AN INJURY OCCURS, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.

Do not delay care to document an injury, but If one does occur, make sure to take photos, identify witnesses, and report the incident. Make sure to notify the school and transportation operator, and preserve route, bus, and incident details. Speak with a legal professional if you are unsure of how to proceed.
