What do I do if I’m being sued?
Receiving court papers requires a timely response, even if you believe the allegations are wrong.
SPEAKING WITH AN ATTORNEY IS NEVER A BAD IDEA.
If you are being sued in civil court, planning your next move can be challenging. Deadlines make this even harder. Speak with a Lawyer about your unique legal situation.
Here are some helpful tips if you are facing a lawsuit:
Save every document and record when you received it. Identify the court, case number, parties, and any hearing or response date.
Determine the correct response for that court. Maryland District Court and Circuit Court procedures differ. For example, a District Court small claim may use a document such as Notice of Intention to Defend, but check requirements in your district.
Notify any potentially applicable insurer and obtain legal help promptly. Send copies of documents rather than simply describing the dispute.
